After playing the game, when Will heads towards his home, passing by Hawkins Lab, he realizes some unusual creature is following him. He runs towards the shed in the backyard where he encounters that creature and vanishes. From there, the biggest mystery of Season 1 starts that where did Will vanishes?
Will’s mother asks his brother whether the Will came home last night as both his mother and brother were at their work at that time. Assuming that Will might leave for school early, they didn’t notice his disappearance. After a few hours, when there was no information about Will, his mother approaches Sheriff Hopper to find about him.
Nancy, with her best friend Barb, attends her boyfriend’s party, where Barb vanishes from the poolside (just like Will disappeared). Will’s brother takes photographs of the forest from where the Will got to disappear, and he hears screams from the teenage party. He takes pictures of the party from the far where later Barb is found in the pool, dragging by an unseen creature. Meanwhile, Will’s mother tries to contact him by lighting candles, and Will manages to speak her, revealing he is alive. But her hopes got crushed when she found Will’s body in the quarry.
While investigating Will’s case, Sherriff Hopper encounters Berrin, but he shows him the CCTV footage, which confirms that Will was not there that night. Nancy starts searching for Barb and take help from Jonathan’s photographs. She found an unusual creature was standing behind Barb just before her disappearance. The flashbacks reveal that Berrin is the father of Eleven, who locked her in the lab to work on telekinesis skills.
Using her telekinesis skills and school’s equipment, Elevent communicates with the Will and confirms the boys that Will is confined in an upside-down world (a parallel universe) by Demogorgon monster from Dungeons and Dragons game. While searching for Barb and Will, Nancy crawls in an upside-down world where Demogorgon tries to kill her, but she manages to escape. Later, Jonathan and Nancy decide to kill Demogorgon.
From her telekinesis power, Eleven realizes that Barb is dead, and Will is about to die. To save her son, Will’s mother enters into the upside-down world through the lab, while Hopper gives the location of Eleven to government officials and Brenner. Nancy and Jonathan injure Monster while Joyce and Hopper save Will. Eleven kills most of the agents at the school, but as she exhausts, Brenner finds her and holds her. Monster encounter Brenner and Eleven at the school from where Eleven escapes with the boys. Later she kills Monster but vanishes in the process. Will reunites with his friends and family, and celebrates Christmas.

As per the cliff-hanger ending of season 1, people were wondering whether Eleven is alive or dead. To their surprise, Eleven is alive and living with Hopper in his grandmother’s cabin. Hopper is her secret guardian but over-protective. Will is still traumatized by Upside-Down world and hallucinates Mind Flayer in his memories. Joyce takes the help of Owens to treat Will, who gives him some routine tests.
Meanwhile, Max catches Lucas’s attention while Dustin finds the slug-like creature in his house and named him Dart. Mike still believes that Eleven is alive and tries to contact her. Jonathan and Nancy try to tell Barb’s parents truth about her death. Eleven gets frustrated with Hopper’s overprotective nature and escapes from the cabin. She tries to meet Mike, but when she caught him arguing with Max, she thought both are dating and leave the place.
Dustin learns that Dart escapes from its cage, killed his cat and he is an infant of Demogorgon. Will’s mind is possessed by Mind Flayer, who is the most powerful monster of the upside-down, controlling everyone, including Demogorgon. Mind Flayer wants to enter in the Hawkins, and for that, he controls Will’s mind, making him his secret spy. Joyce is dating Bob, and Lucas comes closer to Max. Hopper finds a tunnel to enter the upside-down world but somehow trapped in the tunnel.
Owens reveals that a virus controls Will’s mind, and to kill the monster, they have to damage all the tunnels, which will result in the death of all infect3ed creatures, including Will. Lucas, Max, Dustin, and Steve regroup to lure Dart into the junkyard, but surprisingly he comes back with a pack of creatures and attacks the team. The team rushes to the lab, and the pack of creatures attacks them in the lab. Mike convinces Joyce to sedate Will so he won’t be able to share their location with the monster, and Joyce took him to the cabin of Hopper to overheat him, which will remove the virus from his body.
Bob and Owens stay at the lab, helping others to escape, but lastly, Bob gets killed by creatures’ attack, and Owen gets severely injured while escaping. The group realizes that Mind Flayer wants to spread into the universe, and the real Will instructs them to close the gate of the upside-down world to kill the Mind Flayer. Mind-flayer sends more creatures to attack the group, but Eleven comes for the rescue. Eleven kills most of the creatures with the help of group members and closes the gate of the upside-down world, thinking that Mind Flayer is dead now. Nancy, Joyce, and Jonathan successfully save Will from Mind-Flayer.
Hawkins Lab got shut down due to Nancy’s tape, and Owens forges Eleven’s birth certificate, naming her Jane Hopper. The group, along with Eleven, attends the Snowball event where Mike kisses Eleven, Max kisses Lucas while Nancy pair up with Dustin.
Season 2 again ends with a cliff-hanger ending depicting that Mind Flayer is still alive in the upside-down world, waiting for the comeback to take revenge. He is towering over the school and keeping an eye on the group, especially Eleven.
Does this mean that in Season 3, the crew will again encounter Mind Flayer? Or some other disaster is waiting for them? Will Dr. Brenner make his entry in Season 3? This suspense will only end in Season 3 of Stranger Things.

Scoop Troop sends a strong signal through Dustin’s Radio to communicate with Hopper, Joyce, and Murray, who have entered in the basement of the Starcourt. Billy makes Eleven unconscious and presents her to the Mindflayer so he can possess her. But Eleven triggers his beach memory, and he sacrifices himself to save Eleven.
Russian men attack Joyce, Hopper, and Murray, and Hopper kills them by pushing them into a machine. While killing them, Hopper doesn’t get enough time to remove himself away from the gate, and he sacrifices himself as Joyce closes the gate to kill the Mindflayer.
